TIME AS A UNIT EMPLOYEE

Barclay joined UNIT in 2017. At UNIT, he worked on the organisation of transport in the Transportation and Logistics department. In his position, he held Grade 10 security clearance. According to General Austin Pierce, Barclay was a “low-level citizen employee”. (UNIT HQ)

Around this time, he lived at 7 Barstock House in Rotherhithe, SE16 6MC. (Barclay Pierre-Dupont) In 2020, Barclay had to fill in for Roger Trevithick when Roger’s wife went into labour early, despite only being grade ten, taking phone calls for him. This led to Barclay being filed as Trevithick’s replacement, much to his annoyance. (Homo Aqua)

Barclay had a number of friends – Karl, Kareem and Joe – that he was too busy to see on Kareem’s birthday because of his UNIT job. (UNIT HQ)

In 2024, he met The Doctor in UNIT tower. According to Barclay, “he said hello […] then off he went”. He thought about the meeting every day since. (Homo Aqua)

FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH HOMO AQUA

Sometime later, in London, Barclay Pierre-Dupont was awoken in the middle of the night by his UNIT-issued mobile phone. Waking up Kirby, he rushed them to get dressed under the pretence that he has been summoned to Scotland to deal with an oil spill, and dropped them off with their mother (despite the protestations of Sergeant Hana Chakri over dropping them off with her in the vehicle). As Barclay and Hana continued on their way, Hana explains to Barclay that he had been assigned to the mission “to replace someone called Roger Trevithick” who was on another mission at the time. Arriving at an aircraft hangar, the pair were greeted by General Austin Pierce and taken aboard a plane, where the general explained that their plane will proceed to Cabrera from where they will be picked up and moved to the location of their assignment: a village called Cala Escondida on the island of Dragonera.

On the plane trip, Barclay was the only one unable to examine their mission briefing, because of his low security clearance level. He attempted to confide in Pip Morgan that he had been put on the mission due to a long-standing issue in UNIT’s Human Resources department where he is constantly marked as Roger Trevithick’s replacement because of a one-off incident where Barclay covered Trevithick’s phone calls when he rushed away to see his wife during a premature birth. This, however, only panicked the corporal, who then refused to speak to him any further, fearful that he had already said and shown too much to Barclay about the mission.

Arriving on the island, Barclay was taken with the rest of the team to Cala Escondida by helicopter, where UNIT soldiers had set up an encampment across the coastline. After arriving at a building at the edge of the village, and going through a decontamination process, Barclay was introduced to Colonel Tariq Hashim who showed him and the rest of the team the body of a dead Homospondyl Erectus who had been shot recently by some local Spanish fishermen, and strung up on the wall in hopes of making money out of it as an attraction of sorts.

When General Pierce sent everyone else off on various tasks, Barclay was meant to follow him, but before he did, Barclay took a moment to stop in front of the Homospondyls‘ body and cross himself as a mark of respect for the dead creature.

Out on the clifftops, Barclay helped set up a signalling translation pulse to call in other Homospondyls whilst General Pierce and Colonel Hashim discussed matters.

During the night, Barclay was scrambled into action with the rest of the base when Pip tried to radio for help for Private Bushra Abdallah and himself who had both been on night guard duty in the room where the body was being kept. Barclay rushed into the room with Pierce and a href=”/hana-chakri” title=”Hana Chakri”>Chakri to discover it empty. He was then present to witness General Pierce’s realisation that Pip and Bushra had both been buried alive in the floor, becoming slightly panicked and upset when the general broke away enough of the floor to discover the head of a now-dead Pip.

Out on the coastline, the general tried to reassure Barclay about the recent deaths whilst Barclay explained directly to him that he shouldn’t be on the mission. This was met with the response that UNIT protocol (GOLD-CONTACT protocols (UNIT HQ) dictated that “at times of historical, political or cultural impact, a member of the civilian staff must stand alongside the military as witness” – effectively onboarding Barclay to the mission in a new role. After the general left Barclay and Hana Chakri alone, Barclay confided in her about his previous brief encounter with the Doctor, and how it remained a key part of his everyday thoughts. Hana then explained to Barclay about Aquakind’s existence, their previous ownership of the planet, and UNIT’s role in keeping knowledge about them under wraps.

Barclay was then witness, recording the situation with a provided camcorder, as General Pierce – via the assistance of translation technology devised by UNIT scientist Steve Chesney – negotiated on the coastline with a Homospondyl for talks of peaceful settlement. The Homospondyl, backed up by a swarm of others, agreed this but with an insistance that “We all talk to all humans.”

Like the rest of the base, Barclay suddenly received a phone alert insisting upon an immediate return to home base, as all over the world, Homospondyls had begun to emerge from the sea, revealing themselves to everyone.

ASSIGNMENT TO H20 COMMITTEE

Sometime later, at Barbara’s home, Barclay filled her in on days he would be unable to see Kirby, under pretence that this was due to a job promotion in transport – when in-fact, it was because he was now required as a presence with an assortment of other peace delegates at the Empress Hall, as part of the H2O Committee.

Whilst present at the hall, before the beginning of the first day of talks, Roger Trevithick burst into the hall, shouting furiously at Barclay, declaring that it is all his fault that he is not being authorised to be present for the talks, before being apprehended and forced out of the room whilst a bemused Barclay watches. After a brief malfunction with one of the seals that Jackson St Lewis resolves, The Waterway was then opened to allow Aquakind delegates into Empress House.

To the surprise of Barclay (and everyone else), as well as four Homospondyls, other creatures arrived for talks. Two “Piscimorpha Grandis“, and the last of which – a “Homomorpha Sapiens, or to simplify, Homo Amphibian” – was leader of the delegation, Salt. After some brief conversation with the assigned ambassador, Sir Jonathan Hynes, Salt presented her own “gift” for humanity – the dead eggs of her unhatched children – and explained that they did not survive because of humanity’s pollution. Salt then followed this by refusing Sir Hynes as an ambassador, and insisting that she would speak with only one person: Barclay.

Amidst panicked confusion from outside the room amongst UNIT staff like Kate, Shirley and Ibrahim, and bewilderment from the other delegates in the room, Salt explained that they were aware of Barclay’s gesture of respect towards the dead Homospondyl when he was at Cala Escondida. Salt then asks Barclay if he will stand as humanity’s ambassador, and a bemused but brave Barclay responds: “Okay.”

BEGINNING OF ROLE AS DIPLOMATIC AMBASSADOR

General Austin Pierce noted that Barclay had specifically been chosen by “Aquakind” as an ambassador in diplomatic discussions. (UNIT HQ)
