Biography

Salt was the name used on land by a member of the Aquakind, of a subspecies dubbed Homomorpha sapiens, or informally Homo amphibia, by UNIT. They led the peace talk delegation for Aquakind as the ambassador. (Homo Aqua) When asked her name, she stated that her true title could not be translated. (Plastic Apocalypse)

Unlike the homospondyls of her retinue, she was able to engage with humanity in English, rather than her own language. Upon her arrival, she dismissed Sir Jonathan Hynes as human ambassador, and decreed that she would instead speak with Barclay Pierre-Dupont. (Homo Aqua)

BEHIND THE SCENES
CASTING

Salt, in her female form, was portrayed by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who previously portrayed Tish Jones – the sister of Tenth Doctor companion, Martha Jones – in series 3 of Doctor Who (2005), which was also produced by Russell T Davies.

Prior to The War Between’s broadcast, Joshua Sinclair-Evans, who portrayed Salt in her male form, was billed as “Homo amphibia” to maintain the reveal of his role as a surprise on the lead-up to broadcast. On the actual episode, he was credited as “SALT (MALE)”.
