PLOT

The Doctor and Tegan arrive in Butler’s Wharf, London… where they have some unfinished business with a very old enemy!

NOTES

  • Tegan Jovanka flippantly asks The Doctor if he has brought his sonic snorkel.
  • This is the first story since 1996’s Doctor Who TV movie not to have Nicholas Briggs voicing The Daleks. Instead, the story uses archive recordings of the actors from Resurrection of the Daleks.
  • If this story is set in or after 2023, then the lack of UNIT Tower in the skyline can be considered an error.
  • Despite the TARDIS exterior being that used during the Fifth Doctor’s era, the story has the aged up versions of the Doctor and Tegan travelling together, fitting in with the events of the Tales of the TARDIS episode Earthshock, in which Tegan came onboard the Remembered TARDIS with a “remembered” iteration of the Fifth Doctor.
  • This is the first live-action appearance of Turlough since The Caves of Androzani.
  • In the in-vision commentary for The Giggle, Russell T Davies stated his theory that when the Fourteenth Doctor bigenerated into the Fifteenth Doctor that it caused every Doctor to bigenerate, potentially creating a reason for this older Fifth Doctor. Indeed, an older Seventh Doctor in The Curse of Fenric blamed it on “time streams” being “a funny thing”, suggesting something similar.
  • The TARDIS brings the Fifth Doctor and Tegan to Butler’s Wharf where they once said goodbye in Resurrection of the Daleks.
  • The Fifth Doctor and Tegan are somewhat older, much like they appeared in Earthshock. Tegan wears the same outfit she wore in The Power of the Doctor, an adventure which saw her meet a hologram version of the Fifth Doctor who was also aged.
  • Turlough states that homeworld has been invaded by The Daleks. His homeworld will one day compete in the 803rd Interstellar Song Contest, as seen in The Interstellar Song Contest.
  • The Doctor’s retort about Tegan’s rude comment towards Turlough’s aged appearance is reminiscent of when his hologram self told her off for stating the same thing about him in The Power of the Doctor.
  • The Fifth Doctor has regained a new sonic screwdriver. An identical one was previously destroyed by the Terileptils in The Visitation and not seen on televison again until The TV Movie owned by the Seventh Doctor.
  • Tegan asks him if it’s a new one, to which the Doctor says that it’s an upgrade. Tegan then remarks this one actually works.
  • The older Fifth Doctor tells the Dalek to check his identity. Upon cross-referencing, they see a younger Fifth Doctor from Resurrection of the Daleks, the Seventh Doctor from Remembrance of the Daleks, the Sixth Doctor from Revelation of the Daleks, as well as the Fourth Doctor, the Third Doctor from Day of the Daleks, the Second Doctor and the First Doctor from “Flashpoint“.
  • Butler’s Wharf is a wharf located in Bermondsey, London on the bank of the River Thames. It was used as a filming location in the Doctor Who television stories The Dalek Invasion of Earth and Resurrection of the Daleks.
