Leonora was a character in William Shakespeare’s play Cardenio.
In one scene, Henriquez observed that she was weeping and asked Barnardo to be gentle to her. Leonora replied “Then woe the day! I’m circled round with fire. No way to escape but through the flames”. Later, Julio referred to her as “poor Leonora”. (Double Falsehood)

In the real world, Leonora was a character in Lewis Theobald’s Double Falsehood, which he purportedly based upon the lost play Cardenio. Leonora’s lines in the short story Double Falsehood are lifted from Theobald’s play.
