Just when it seemed it would be yet another chaotic day managing her family’s disputes, Martha Jones finds trouble waiting for her at work. Trapped on the Moon with space rhinos looking for a criminal and the air running out, she will have to come to trust a seemingly mad stranger calling himself”The Doctor”.

But can the Tenth Doctor save the day this time?

  • Martha refers to the events in Aliens of London / World War Three and Army of Ghosts / Doomsday in her recounting of extra terrestrial experiences in the past few years..
  • Freema Agyeman also played the character of Adeola in the episode Army of Ghosts. In this episode it is established they are related, and in the short novel Made of Steel it is further mentioned that the two looked somewhat similar.
  • The Tenth Doctor again talks of his fondness for shops in hospitals, something he first made reference to in New Earth.
  • There is a vague resemblance between the Judoon and another alien race called the Sontarans, but no connection is established in the episode itself.
  • In a trend hinted at in Love & Monsters and established in The Runaway Bride, reference is made to “Mr Saxon”, who will appear later on in the series. His name appears twice in this episode, firstly on a radio report where he is referenced as preaching the existence of life on other planets, and again on some posters at the end of the episode, which read”Vote Saxon“.
  • Martha asks The Doctor if he has a brother and he replies, “Not any more”. A brother to The Doctor was previously mentioned in the spin-off New Adventure novel Tears of the Oracle by Justin Richards, which was ed by Simon Winstone, script or for this episode. The brother’s name, or at least the name he used, was Irving Braxiatel.
  • Though The Doctor recognises the Judoon, this is their first appearance in the Doctor Who universe.
  • Morgenstern refers to a”Saxon” during his radio broadcast, claiming that the events of the episode prove Saxon’s theories about alien life correct, in the preceding episode, “The Runaway Bride”, a Mr. Saxon is said to have given the military the order to fire on the Empress’s ship. A”Vote Saxon” poster, identical to one seen in the Torchwood episode”Captain Jack Harkness“, and also in the trailer for the series, can be seen in the alleyway when The Doctor collects Martha. ‘Mr Saxon’ became the running theme for the third series, which came to its conclusion in the episodes”Utopia”, “The Sound of Drums” and”Last of the Time Lords“.
  • The alias “John Smith” was given to The Doctor by Jamie McCrimmon in the serial The Wheel in Space and has been used as an alias by The Doctor on multiple occasions since, most notably during his third incarnation. Prior to this episode, his most recent use of the alias was in”School Reunedition“.
  • At one point, The Doctor wears the same dressing gown he wore in”The Christmas Invasion”, which originally belonged to Jackie Tyler’s friend, Howard.
  • Martha refers to the spaceship crashing into Big Ben in”Aliens of London“, the events of “The Christmas Invasion” or “The Runaway Bride“, and the Battle of Canary Wharf against the Cybermenfrom “Army of Ghosts”. She also recalls the loss of her cousin Adeola who “worked at Canary Wharf” and disappeared, a reference to the “Army of Ghosts” character played by the same actress.
  • The Doctor voices his approval of the hospital shop, a reference to “New Earth“, when he stated that he likes”little shops”.
