The Black Archive #85: Frontios

Synopsis

“Your minds are being eaten away by the scale of the disaster we call Frontios”

The dark themes of Christopher H Bidmead’s dystopian tale of a human colony on the brink of extinction could have been overshadowed by the budgetary and editorial constraints of this studio bound adventure. Yet despite the design flaws of the Tractators, some unconvincing special effects and storyline inconsistencies, the unsettling realism of the character-driven drama draws the viewer into its narrative world.

This Archive considers the key themes of colonialism, homelessness, bereavement and mental breakdown and the role that monsters play in understanding the human condition.

Paul Driscoll is on the Black Archive editorial team and is based in Leigh, Greater Manchester.
