Ronny Jhutti reprises his role as the neurotic ethicist, alongside Silas Carson as the voice of the Ood, Teresa Banham (The Crown, Robin Hood), Farshid Rokey (Tyrant, Our Girl), James Barriscale (Hijack, Wizards vs. Aliens) and Georgina Beedle (Catherine the Great, Doc Martin).

Producer James Goss said: “When the Empire receives a distress signal sent by a spaceship from a thousand years it the future, humanity needs to tread carefully. Ethicist Danny Bartok (Ronny Jhutti) is sent to stop the expedition making a terrible mistake.
“We never got to explore this side of Danny’s character in The Impossible Planet (he did spend much of it crawling for his life) but here he’s trying to devise a whole new field of ethics on a ship that’s sinking into lava.”
Speaking in Doctor Who Magazine issue 598, actor Ronny Jhutti said: “It was lovely to be asked [to return to Torchwood] and exciting to do because Danny takes a central role. He’s exactly the same – panicking and worrying as the ethics adviser on a team that ostensibly goes through what Danny’s team went through on TV. It echoes the dramatic construction of that story wonderfully.”
