Director Scott Handcock tells us more: “The Dying Room’s a brilliant script. A Torchwood tale set in Nazi-occupied Paris, written by the wonderful Lizzie Hopley, starring the magnificent Simon Russell Beale as Monsieur LeDuc, an innocent outsider recounting a devastating evening of events to Nazi interrogator Grau, played by Mark Elstob.
“Obviously we were all very excited to have Simon Russell Beale on board. We’d been recording Bernice Summerfield and the Prisoner at the same time as Simon had been recording Bach: The Great Passion for Radio 4; he saw the fun we were having, chatted to us, and said he’d love to do something sci-fi – so naturally we contacted his agent the very next day!
Much like when John Sessions came in to record The Conspiracy, Simon knew nothing at all about Torchwood on screen. He was just very impressed by the quality of the writing and wanted to be a part of it – and we’re thrilled that Torchwood continues to attract such high-profile talent!”
“Lizzie’s script is both very clever and very different, ” says producer James Goss, “How would Torchwood have been involved in the Second World War? It’s set in occupied Paris – a place where everyone is compromised, and everyone has to lie to stay alive. Oddly, the only person who doesn’t lie is the SS Interrogator, Herr Grau.
Also, it offered Scott and me the chance to work with Simon Russell Beale, who is, literally, one of the most acclaimed actors working in the UK. He’s also utterly lovely, and now he’s in Torchwood.”
