Lady Sarah Whiteside was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary I of England and one of Evelyn Smythe’s ancestors.
She was secretly married to Reverend Thomas Smith, which was forbidden under the Queen’s rule. Sarah was ordered to be executed until the Sixth Doctor (under his “John Smith” alias) revealed that she was pregnant with Thomas’s child. Upon hearing this (and with The Doctor’s persuasion), the Queen ordered her to act as lady-in-waiting to her half-sister Elizabeth, who was imprisoned in the Towerof London. Grateful that he helped spare her life, Sarah swore to name her unborn child after The Doctor. Her son John Whiteside-Smith later became a prominent member of Queen Elizabeth I’s court and played a role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. (The Marian Conspiracy)
