The Slender-Fingered Cats of Bubastis
Lisa Barrowman (Bernice Summerfield)
It wasn’t true that you could see the Cats from space. It was impossible, a ridiculous idea that wouldn’t stand up to even the slightest examination.
And yet there were people on Bubastis who believed it…
Most archaeologists – including Professor Bernice Summerfield – know only two facts about Bubastis: one is that its cheerless swamps are home to five giant stone Cats, whose ancient origins are shrouded in mystery; the other that it has more bugs and beetles than anyone should ever have to deal with.
So when Bernice, Ruth and Jack arrive on the planet to search for a missing girl, they are unprepared for what they will find. Like the insectoid villagers with a decidedly squeamish attitude to mammals. Or the archaeological expedition made up of over-sexed students. Or the alarmingly unprofessional Neon Tsara…
To make matters worse, Jack suddenly finds himself on the wrong side of the law and Ruth has brain-ache from ingesting forbidden historical knowledge. Worse still, Bernice has promised to write a book of poetry that’s due to be published in a week… and she can’t think of anything to rhyme with ‘Bubastis.’

Nearly a decade after the novel was originally published, The Slender-Fingered Cats of Bubastis is retold as an immersive audiobook and released today by Big Finish Productions.
Bernice Summerfield on the planet of the Cats
Lisa Bowerman, who has played Bernice Summerfield at Big Finish for nearly 24 years, returns to narrate a five-hour audio novel set during the chaotic time Benny lived on planet Legion.
This exciting adventure, written by Xanna Eve Chown, follows Benny as she journeys to Bubastis, a strange planet known for its enormous stone cats, to search for a young woman who has mysteriously vanished. But nothing can prepare her for what she finds.
With a woman’s life at stake, a planet full of secrets, and a flamboyant Kadeptian up to no good, what could possibly go wrong?
Bernice Summerfield: The Slender-Fingered Cats of Bubastis is now available to own as a digital download (for just £9.99), exclusively.

Producer and writer, Xanna Eve Chown, said: “It was really exciting to hear Lisa reading my book, after all, she is the voice I had in my head While I was writing it. Although, actually I was lucky enough to write a play (A Handful of Dust) for this team — Ruth, Jack and Benny — and attend the recording, so I had all their voices in my mind to play around with.
“Jack is a delight to write, especially when he’s being naughty! In this book, Benny has a lot on her plate. She is being paid to write a book of poetry, while volunteering to locate a missing girl, but ends up solving a centuries-old archaeological puzzle. I absolutely loved writing this book!”
Lisa Bowerman added: “Some books just come brilliantly off the page and Xanna’s book was an absolute joy to read. It was great fun! It’s a great, exciting romp and sometimes you just don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know what the audio equivalent is of a page-turner, but it’s one of those.”
